‘Graves will not be bulldozed’
NZPA Canberra The Maltese High Commission in Canberra has denied that its Government wants to bulldoze three cemeteries on the island which contain 79 New Zealand war dead.
The acting Maltese High Commissioner (Mr Joseph Caruana) said his Government had asked the British Government more than two years ago to remove all the remains in three of the cemetries and concentrate all the war'dead in a fourth cemetery. “The fact that the Maltese Government have waited patiently all this time'’ is proof enough that there was never any question of bulldozing,’’ Mr Caruana said. There was also no suggestion that the remains would be put into "a big awful hole.” The Mtarfa cemetery, which the Government intended to use, was one of the best kept cemeteries on the island. The number of dead buried in the four cemeteries was 8700.
