Money for promotion work

The Canterbury Promotion Council looks set to get financial support from twothirds of the area’s local authorities.

The council gets 69 per cent of its income from local body grant, and is pleased with increasing support this year.

Eight local bodies have approved grants, seven are expected to, and six have declined the council's request, according to the executive officer, Mr B. R. Dunstan, last evening. The Promotion Council asked local bodies to give a grant of 23c for each person in their area. The Christchurch City Council had budgeted for this amount but some authorities might give less, Mr Dunstan told a Promotion Council meeting. The six local bodies which are not contributing to the council are from outlying areas.

Mr Dunstan said that these areas either promoted themselves or needed to ; be con-

vinced by the council that it worked for the province, not just Christchurch. The grant wanted by the Canterbury council was small compared with those sought by promotion bodies in other centres, Mr Dunstan said.

The Hastings promotions association, for example, received a grant of equivalent to $1.30 for each citizen, and in Timaru the grant was 60c a head.
