Selwyn a bridge to be 'unplugged’
5 New Zealand’s only heated bridge, over the Selwyn river, on. State • highway 1, will Be unplugged at the end of the winter.
Heating cables were installed over the bridge deck in, 1976 to overcome icing problems during the winter months. The icing problems started after a new timber decking was built, and when “gritting” of the timber service proved useless it was decided to heat the 320-metre structure.
All went well for a couple of years but rising costs and increasing malfunctions have caused costs to escalate. Repairs of up to $30,000 could be needed to prolong the life of the “electric blanket.”
