Guillotine cheated
NZPA-Reuter Paris President Francois Mitterrand has commuted the death sentence on Philippe Maurice.
Maurice, aged 25. was condemned to the guillotine for the murder of a policeman. The former President Valery Giscard d'Estaing received his 'dossier in March but said he would not announce a decision on the case until after the presidential election.
The new president has expressed distaste for the death penalty and said before the election he did not intend to send any prisoners to their death during his term of office.
Seven convicted murderers await the , guillotine.
