Syrians down Israeli drone
NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem Israel yesterday lost its third pilotless reconnaissance plane over Lebanon since the missile crisis began last month, a military spokesman said. He said the drone was shot down over the Bekaa Valleyin east Lebanon by missiles fired from inside Syria just across from the Lebanese border. (In Damascus, a military spokesman said Syrian air defences shot down an Israeli reconnaissance plane which had violated Syrian airspace 40km west of Damascus.)
Officials said the United States special envoy, Philip Habib, was expecting to hear the results of a meeting between Rifaat Assad, brother of the Syrian President (Mr Hafez Assad) and King Khalid of Saudi Arabia on the crisis over the stationing of Syrian anti-aircraft missiles in Lebanon. The Israeli Prime Minister (Mr Menachem Begin) offered to go to Beirut at 2,4 hours notice for peace talks or receive the Lebanese President (Mr Elias Sarkis) in Jerusalem to sign a peace treaty between the two countries.
