550 register for school centenary
Some 550 people have registered for Akaroa High School's centenary celebrations to be held at Labour Day Week-end. Most of those who had registered were couples, and about. 300 were former pupils, said the centenary committee's secretary, Mrs Mary Jane Price. Registrations will close at the end of the month, and about 600 people, including 400 former pupils, are expected to enrol. One former pupil will come from Singapore for the
celebrations, and at least one person is coming from Australia. Others were coming from throughout New Zealand. although most were expected from Canterbury. The oldest former pupils to register have been those who attended the school about 70 years ago, although it was difficult to find the names of people who attended before 1916, as the old records were not in good order. Mrs Price said addresses were still being discovered, and invitations sent.
