N.Z. loses bridge test
The Australian women’s contract bridge team defeated the touring New Zealanders by 23 points in. the two-day test match of 120 deals that was played in Hobart during the week-end. The game proved a swinging encounter of particularly high scoring. New Zealand led at the end of the first day, 150-135, aftef 60 deals and the rounds of the second day were very close until the last session. . At 80 deals, the score was 176-all. After the ninety-ninth deal, the scores were again tied at 219. On the last deal of the fifth session (board 100), New Zealand scored 16. But the lead was not sustained on the final 20 deals, when Australia forged ahead to win by 280 points to 257. The New Zealand captain, Mr Claude Rowland, of Wellington. played the Christchurch pair, Kathy Boardman and Jane Evitt, throughout. Mr Rowland had special praise for the contribution of ’ Mrs Boardman, whose game, he said, had the brilliance of an international open player.
