Hagley wins badminton but lead cut back

Although it beat South Brighton convincingly. Hagley I had its lead in the A grade badminton competition slightly reduced in the sixth round of p’lav at the Skellerup Hall on Sunday evening.

Before the round. Hagley I led Railway I by five points. But while Hagley' beat South Brigh-ton.!-1. Railway went even better, beating Railway 11, 8-0. Hagley I suffered its only loss in tiie men’s doubles, where Brian Williams and David Ross suffered their first doubles loss, to Prasanna Gulasekharam and Paul Boatwood.

Indeed. Boatwod pressed Williams hard in the second game of their singles match, but was unble to overcome the in-form Hagley player. The win enabled Williams to maintain his impressive record of not having lost a set in his six singles matches this season.

Railway I dropped just one game in winning — Graham Rogers taking the first game off Andrew Duckmanton.

In spite of its heavy loss, South Brighton retained third place, being a massive 21 points clear of Mairehau.

Knox scored its second win on a games countback in three rounds against Mairehau, and can thank its two women. Janet Miles and Lynda Kitchingham, for its success. Not only did they win their singles matches, but they combined to beat Noeline Sintes and Joanne Terrace in the women’s doubles.

University achieved its first win of the competitin, beating Canterbury, 6-2. four singles wins

gave University the ideal start over the team which has had three victories in the previous five rounds.

Hagley II beat Bryndwr I on a countback. while Bryndwr 11. the youngest team in the grade, did particularly well to beat Christchurch, 6-2.

That win will be especially pleasing for Shane Tetai and David Reid, as it produced their first win as a doubles pairing. The same applies to Reid and Julia Saunders, who will be delighted with their win over Rob Manderson and Chris Erikson.
