Busy bowls week-end
The attention of Canter*, bury indoor bowlers will be focused on the South Island championships at Timaru over Queen’s Birthday weekend. ■ \ Golden Bay-Motueka and Buller are the only two centres not represented among the 1130 players taking part in the tourney. Canterbury heads the number of entrants with 280, followed closely by the host centre, South Canterbury, with 244. The pairs and fours will be
played through to post-sec-tion play on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Postsection play will be completed, and the finals of 18 ends contested on Monday. Among the Canterbury teams expected to figure prominently is that of Trevor Austin, the pairs winner in 1973 and 1976, and runner-up in 1979, arid winner of the fours title in 1977. Leon McLennan, the fours winner in 1976, "reached both finals in 1977, taking the pairs, and
being narrowly defeated by Austin in the fours. Alf Williamson, the fours winner in 1973, has a strong team, as. has the Central Otago team of Ken Hinton, runner-up in -last year’s national fours. The -fours winner in 1979, Beau Heather (Otago) goes to Timaru with the same team,. The Timaru association has set the stage for a weekend of first class competition, and a renewal of many friendships on the social side.
