Ashburton hospitality
Sir,—Last month I visited relatives in Ashburton, and through your paper I would like to express my thanks for the kindness and politeness I received from everybody. No bothers over driving licence, money exchange or, as then, passports, (a) I lost my reading glasses in one of the local hotels; they were returned the next day. (b) When I asked street directions of a complete stranger, I was offered a lift to my destination in their car. (c> At the local Post Office, when I asked how much to post a letter air-mail to Sydney, the assistant at the counter even affixed the stamp to the envelope, and informed where the post-box was. These little things might be taken for granted in Ashburton, but certainly not in my city of adoption for the last 20 years (Sydney). I am not an elderly person, but a robust male in my fifties, so it wasn’t a case of helping old ladies across the road.—Yours, etc., F. W. FRIER, Sydney. May 22, 1981.
