In praise of Mrs Thatcher

Mrs Margaret Thatcher is the first British Prime Minister to realise that “things have to be paid for by hard work,” the Canterbury branch of the English Speaking Union of the Commonwealth was told by Miss Judy Hutchinson, the Lon-don-based chairman of the Union's Hospitality Council. She described Mrs Thatcher as a remarkable woman who was “enormously courageous.”

On the E.E.C., Miss Hutchinson said she had it on “high authority” that Britain was firm in its commitments to agreements with New Zealand. “Britain is determined to stand by New Zealand, and to ensure that you get a fair deal,” she said. She spoke of the importance of maintaining links between New Zealand and Britain, two countries which she described as the outposts of democracy in a threatened world.
