Telethon activities
The organisers of Telethon 81 are collating all the hundreds of fund-raising events in aid of this year's Telethon cause, the International Year of Disabled Persons. Anyone who has already raised money or is planning to do so for Telethon, but has not yet told the organisers, is asked to telephone 792-680 and ask for the Telethon office.
Several fund-raising events have already been a great success in Christchurch.
Two nine-year-old boys. Jonathon Owens and Paul Currie, held a street stall in Timaru and raised $Bl, and. Rachelle and Nadia Rooney and their friends at Darfield held a stall and did household jobs last Thursday to raise funds. A 24-hour “dartathon" was held by the Golden Moose Social Club on May 15 and 16 — an event it has run every Telethon. In addition, the Wool Testing Services, in Timaru. held a charity golf tournament - at Levels Golf Course on May 14. The two editors of “Off Beat,” the police newsletter. Bernard Quinn and Keith Le
Dulin, have been on a sponsored "dietathon” since May 4 and hope to keep going until June 26. So far, they have raised $450. The Upper Riccarton Spirit of Wisdom group is holding stalls and raffles toraise funds for Telethon, and the Bible Lady, Mrs Renee Stanton, is painting landscapes and portraits on request to help the cause. Two Sumner women have been making tea cosies and
are at present travelling round the South Island sell- : ing their cosies for $5 each for Telethon. Miss Betty Perrett will sell a silk scarf, presented to - her by the Queen when she was her personal maid in 1963. The scarf depicts the Royal yacht Britannia on an aquamarine background with the Royal monogram woven into it, and it is thought to be one of a limited edition.
