Firestone ballot

Technical and laboratory workers at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company factory’ in Papanui have voted by an increased majority in favour of inserting an unqualified preference clause in their first award. The Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union organised the second ballot after the company refused to agree to the telause being inserted in the award during conciliation talks. The award was referred to the Arbitration

Court to settle the issues of wages and the unqualified preference clause. When the workers had their first ballot they voted in favour of the clause by a majority of 62 per cent. The latest vote saw 83 per cent in favour of the clause. The union's secretary. Mr L. G. Morel, said that the vote by the workers, who were ' not previously unionised, was solid proof of the need for union protection in 1981.
