Accolade for N.Z. wine

New Zealand wine has received discriminating praise from no less a perceptive critic than the wine writer for “The Times,” Denis Morris.
Reporting on a wine company’s innovation in grading its white wines from very dry to sweet, he writes: . “An unexpected and delicious bonus at this unusual occasion was a wine served with a buffet lunch. “Until now I had been rather disappointed with the 30 or so New Zealand wines I had seen, but a Marlborough Sylvaner Riesling (Montana) 1980 had a charming fragrance that spelled romance, was pleasant on the palate and was in a decent-sized 75cc bottle: full marks.”
The wine grading system is on an easily understand-
able scale, 1 to 9, with one equalling very dry. The New Zealand Sylvaner Riesling was graded 2, with such wines as white Burgundy, white Graves, Italian white, and Californian white,
