Decision on hydro report a ‘cover-up’
PA Wellington The Government’s decision not to issue a special report on the impact of hydroelectric development on fish and wildlife resources is a “cover-up,” says Labour’s Shadow Minister for the Environment, Mr M. K. Moore. “If it supported the GovernmenVs *think big’ policies, it would surely be released,” Mr Moore said. “There is no doubt the Aromoana smelter will create a power shortage in New Zealand. The Electricity Supply Authorities and the
Government’s own committee, the Energy Advisory Committee, have confirmed this,” Mr Moore said. The public would face power cuts and the pressure would be on to dam the remaining rivers of New Zealand, as oil would hardly be an option for producing electricity. “I suspect the secret report states this point and that is why it is not being released.” Mr Moore said. He called on the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Highet), to release the report.
