‘N-armed U.S. ships visit Japan’
NZPA Tokyo Relations between Japan and the United States, already under strain, were threatened further yesterday when a former United States ambassador to Japan said that'American warships carrying nuclear weapons have been calling at Japanese ports.
,The statement by the former ambassador, Edwin Reischauer, now a Harvard professor and the author of several books on Japan, shocked the Japanese, who are very sensitive about nuclear weapons because of the atom bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
The Prime Minister (Mr Zenko Suzuki) immediately ordered the Foreign Ministry to investigate Mr Reischauer’s remarks.
The former envoy made the remarks in an interview in the United States with Yoshihisa Komori, a specialist reporter with the “Maini : chi” newspaper.
