Men remanded over armed robbery
Two men charged with .the armed robbery of the Ferry Road branch of the Bank of New Zealand were remanded in custody to June 19 for the taking of depositions when they appeared, before Judge Frampton in the District Court yesterday. No pleas were entered by John Christopher Sharnock, aged 22, unemployed, a Canadian (Mr G. Steele), and Anthony Charles Lloyd, aged 27. a taxi proprietor. They are alleged to have committed the offence on May 5. • Each was charged that being armed with a shotgun he robbed Robert McDonald of $16,505.
In addition Lloyd is charged with the possession of cannabis seed on May 8. On this charge he was remanded without plea to June 2.
Bail was sought for Lloyd but it was opposed by Sergeant W. J. McCormick.’
An application for bail will now be made in the High Court. BURGLARY OFFENCE
A man who admitted buying a house from where he removed three electric gutars, related electronic equipment and 150 records, told the police it was his way of "getting even after being kicked out earlier,” said Sergeant McCormick. Michael Laffery, aged 17, unemployed, was convicted of burgling a horse in Riccarton Road on April 14. He was remanded on bail of $l5OO to June 2 for a probation report and sentence. Sergeant McCormick said the defendant had broken into the house, where he used to live, by smashing a window. He then went through the rooms of tenants, remov-
ing the guitars and other property, which was valued at $lB4O.
Compensation of $3OOO was sought, said Sergeant McCormick.
On a charge of driving while disqualified, to which he pleaded not guilty. Laffery was remanded to the same date.. ■ ' ; ?X;.'
BURGLARY CHARGES Andrew Tipani Vermeeren. aged 19. unemployed, facing four charges -of burglary, was remanded in custody to May 25 without plea. It' is alleged that Vermeeren burgled the premises of the Sun Alliance Insurance Co.. Ltd, the Jail Restaurant, and the Carlton Cinema on May, 10, and the New Zealand Motor. Corporation on May 16. - In opposing bail, Sergeant McCormick said the four offences all took place while the defendant was on bail. Property amounting to $6750 was involved. ESCAPER A youth who escaped from the ’ Rolleston Corrective Training Centre earlier this month was sentenced to serve another term at the centre when he appeared for sentence.
Robert Alexander Hall, aged 17, unemployed, had told the police he had escaped because he had been upset by the contents of a letter from his half-sister and had wanted to soft the matter out.
Counsel (Mr G. Hay) said at the time of the offence the defendent had served three weeks of a three-month sentence.
Hall now admitted that what he did was the wrong way of going about resolving his personal difficulties.
