Road toll puzzle
PA Wellington Road deaths over the first -20 days of this month are well ahead of those in the same period last year, and the Ministry of Transport is at a loss to explain why. There have been 32 deaths this month compared with 12 at the same time in May 1980. Eight of the deaths this month occured in Canter-’ bury.
The Chief Traffic Superintendent (Mr S. L. Young) said at considering the unusuweather there seemed to be no reason for thebig increase in fatalities, There . was a larger number of fatal single-vehi-cle accidents, with-a high percentage having an alcohol factor, he said, So far this year 242 deaths have been recorded compared with'2oB this time last year. •. » < .
