Kiwi trialist not in Canterbury team

By JOHN COFFEY Such is the present quality and depth of forward play in Canterbury that no place can be found for the Kiwi trialist, Terry Gillman, in the side to defend the Rugby League Cup against Northland at the Show Grounds on May 30.

Both Gillman and the South Island forward replacement, 1 Wayne Wallace, have had to be content with positions in the Canterbury B squad for the South Island second division tournament at Christchurch the same week-end. Preference has been given •in the ; first XIII to Dougal Adams, at prop, and Danny Carson in the second row. Adams has scored four tries in as many games for the very Impressive Linwood side, and has been just as impressive with his defensive work. He has enjoyed a more sudden rise to prominence than Carson, who showed promise for Canterbury B last winter.

The backs also contain two newcomers. The selection of the Linwood team-mates, David Campbell, who has already had a pleasing first-

class debut for South Island, and David Perkins will cause no surprise. They are equally positive in their outlooks and should prosper at representative level. ; ■ Ray Baxendale will have his first.game for Canterbury as Carson’s second-row partner, after having been a regular member of West Coast teams since 1974. The combining of Baxendale’s and Carson’s talents comes at the expense of John Cole, who played, in three of the four matches last season. The return of Wally Wilson at scrum-half in place of Murray French was predictable after Wilson performed so ably for South Island against Auckland.

The Canterbury A team is— ■ Michael O’Donnell (MaristWestern); David Campbell (Linwood), David Perkins

(Linwood), . Peter Klink (Addington), Mike Williams (Papanui); David Field (Sydenham), Wally Wilson (Linwood); Alan Rushton (Hornby), Paul Truscott (Linwood), Dougal Adams (Linwood); Ray Baxendale (Mar-ist-Western), Danny Carson (Eastern); Barry Edkins (Eastern). Reserves; Paul McCone (Linwood), Lester Wilson (Linwood). The Canterbury B and Canterbury Colts squads for the second division series are —

Canterbury B: Blair Corkran (Addington), Richard Hampton (Kaiapoi), Greg Roberts, Merv Clarkson, Eddie Kerrigan, Blair Nicholson (all Papanui), Tommy Lightfoot (Linwood), John MacGougan (Marist-West-ern), Murray French (Eastern), Rex Dalzell, Peter Hall (Linwood), Colin Archer (Pa-

panui), Terry Gillman (Mar-ist-Western), Jack Milford (Addington), Mike Smith (Sydenham), Gerard Stokes (Eastern), Wayne Wallace (Hornby).
