‘The old girl’
Standing over 30 metres high on the, sky-line south of Twizel, the Johnson Batcher has become a landmark both for project workers and tourists alike. Twizel people working at the Batcher fondly refer to it
' as “the old girl” and feel it only fitting to mark the one millionth cubic yard of concrete completed by her, with j some sort of celebration. The Batcher could not really be called a modern
machine today, but with loving care and attention from the men at Twizel, it continues as an efficient producer, keeping pace with the demand from dam, powerhouse and canal construction on the Upper Waitaki.
