Beef guarantee scheme to end

PA Wellington The dairy beef market guarantee scheme will end on June 30. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre) said the scheme was introduced in 1976 as a transitional measure and it was now believed that the supplementary minimum prices' scheme, introduced in- 1978, had successfully replaced the earlier support. •

“The objective of the dairy beef scheme was to encourage dairy farmers to retain more beef-type calves by guaranteeing a minimum return for each caif registered. . “Now that ■ the S.M.P. scheme effectively , underpins beef prices, some of the gamble has been taken out of calf rearing, and a specialist dairy beef guarantee is no longer required/' Mr Maclntyre said.
