Millers, bakers will pay
The flourmilling and baking industries are going to have to pay an annual rental for part of a new building adjacent to the University of ■Canterbury, which will be" partly occupied by the Wheat Research Institute, at present located in Hereford Street in Christchurch. With the Government the two industries financially support the institute. Because the Government regards the institute as a research association, it has decided that the two industries should contribute about ?80,-000 a year for the rental of the building. The notice of this was, however, not given until the stage had almost been reached where tenders were being called for the new’ building and the point has
been made that, it would have been much fairer to the parties concerned had it been made known much earlier. Dr A. J. Ellis, an Assistant Director-General of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, told a meeting of the Wheat Research Committee recently that the two groups had agreed to pay, subject to certain conditions. A deputation is now due to wait on the Minister of Science, Dr I. Shearer, and if he accepts the propositions put up to him by the parties for payment of the rent thecalling of tenders for the new building could proceed shortly. The building at Ham facing Creyke Road will be occupied by the Chemistry Division of the D.S.I.R. as well as the institute.
