Top ploughmen out again
It is a year ago now since the world ploughing championships were held in Canterbury. Later this year Alan Wallace, from Te Awamulu, who won last year’s national championships held in association with the world match — it was his fourth national title — and Noel Sheat, from Palmerston in Otago, who was runner-up, will go to the Republic of Ireland for the next world contest. This week-end two more New Zealanders will be selected to plough in next year’s world championships in Tasmania.
Twenty-two ploughmen, including five from Canterbury and four from Marlborough, will be ploughing barley stubble today and grassland tomorrow on the property of Mr John McLeod, Milson Line, about 10km from Palmerston North, in the national championships for the Mobil Silver Plough — the name has been changed from Atlantic following the amalgamation of the Atlantic Union Oil Company, the sponsors of national ploughing since its inception in 1956, and Mobil Oil N.Z., Ltd.
Five former national champions are in this year’s field. They are Ken Taylor, from Clinton, who has.been champion twice before and John Thornton, from Momona near Dunedin, who has done likewise, and there is also Elvery Hunt from Palmerston North, David Brown from' Temuka- and Gordon Baird from Wendon, who have each reached the top in New Zealand ploughing.
