Trade with Chile
Sir,—Overseas trade promotion should be vigorous according to Mr D. F. Caygill, St Albans Labour M.P. back from overseas, (“The Press,” \ May 13). Every thinking ’New Zealander would agree. This creates revenue arid jobs;-Yet, at the recent F.O.L. conference, the president, Jim Knox, thundered angrily and negatively at a questioner who dared to query the need for the continuing Chilean trade, bam Worse still, the F.OX. secretary,.Ken Douglas, a prominent Socialist Unity Party member,, shouted back as follows: “I don’t care.if every other country in ‘the world is trading with Chile;: i t’s not right for New Zealand.” I heard this on radio. I would ask Mr Caygill what a Labour government would do about this threat? I would vote for whichever of the three main parties could stand up to this one squarely. Who runs New Zea land really?—Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. May 13, 1981.
