Consumption of alcohol
Sir,—l cannot reconcile the thinking of Mr Gary Williams who in his address to the youth section of the Labour Party (“The Press,” May 12) suggested lowering the legal drinking age as well as the granting of more aid to victims of alcohol abuse. In advocating such policies one’s motives should surely be consistent.. He then referred to the attitude in New Zealand towards alcohol A consumption as “primitive”, f Hardly the right term to use in
a society where all supposedly responsible and mature people can drink in licensed premises, unless by “primitive” he means uncivilised, .which might in fact aptly describes the over-all attitude of Kiwis to alcohol. As for “the mystique of drinking,” that notion Would invariably disappear on condisering the adverse and eroding effect that excessive alcohol consumption has on society and family life.—Yours, etc., GRAHAM K. NEATE. May 12, 1981.
