Duck movements
Sir,— For five years I have made frequent counts of the ducks on the Avon between the Fendalton Road bridge and the Carlton Mill footbridge between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. From .these I am convinced that the big increase in duck population does tally with the start of the shooting season. There is a minor rise in numbers in March and April probably because of the acorn harvest. This year both the shooting season and the migration started early and a few days after the season began I counted 765 ducks. In the summer the population falls to between 10 and 20. In 1978 the number rose to a record 2700 in June. This year it has not so far been above 1500. Hybrid mallard-grey ducks were common 10 years ago; now they are much rarer and the population is almost pure mallard.— Yours, etc., PETER MALING. May 13, 1981.
