‘Wider spread’ of J.P.s
PA Wellington A wider spread more representative of the population is gradually being achieved among the ranks of justices of the peace, according to the Minister of Justice (Mr McLay). He said that in the latest list of nominations for justices that he had approved for recommendation to the Governor-General, 44 per cent were women and 56 per cent were men. Of the total number of 67, nine women and seven men were aged under 45. Ten per cent of justices appointed in 1975 were women. By last year this had risen to 32 per cent. He regarded this trend as heartening and one that he wanted to encourage.
