An attack on the Pope is punishable with life imprisonment under Italian law, and it is in Italy that Pope John Paul’s alleged attacker almost certainly will be tried.
' Under the 1929 Lateran Pacts governing relations between Italy and the Vatican, the Holy See is theoretically empowered to try crimes committed on its territory. But wrongdoers are invariably handed over to the Italian authorities. The Pontiff is considered equal to the Italian President and an attack on either, even if it is not fatal, is punishable with life imprisonment.
