World-wide controversy
NZPA-Reuter Rome Pope John Paul, in his brief but vigorous time in the Papacy, has brought a robust dynamism to world-wide Roman Catholicism, delighting many, chafing others, puzzling some, but putting verve in the institution. His tough line on Church discipline and doctrine has troubled some reformminded Catholics. However, because of his intellectual depth and drive,
along with his obvious charm, even critics of some of his stands have frankly and openly admired him. To millions of- the faithful, he has provided an image of strength . and warmth that has radiated through the Church, and given a new zest to it. He both evoked and spread that quality on his wideranging . travels, exuding a sense of confidence and intimacy with the people and
identity with them, an aura that so vividly marked his tour in the United Slates and elsewhere. However, aside from his engaging presence, John Paul has run a tight ship in his administration. He stiffened the rules against letting priests resign, firmly reasserted the controversial and widely ignored ban on contraception, insisted staunchly on priestly celibacy and rebuffed efforts for women's ordination.
