Burnside lead increases
Burnside increased its lead to eight points in the latest round of men’s division one squash competition for the Blank Trophy. The team, which has yet to have a bye, won both its games at the top of the order very comfortably, Chris Wasley and Mark Crosbie losing only three and four points respectively against John Tolchard and John Triggs.
Christchurch is one of several teams in second-equal place after dropping only one match to High School Old Boys I. Both teams were without their respectivenumber ones. Rod Hayes and Lawrence Skurr, Wayne Seebeck, the Christchurch No. 3, found form after dropping the first game to John Knight and conceded only seven more points. A feature was the first win of Ashburton which scored victories through John Stara and Brent McGregor at the bottom of the order. Rod Williams also, did well to extend the Suburbs No. 1, Max Morrison, the full distance though “skunked” in the final game. University, which had played Wigram at the R.N.Z.A.F. base the previous Thursday, was helped to its victory by Lyne Sparks’s default at No. 1 and Matthew Clements clinched things with a straight games effort against another colt, David Post.
Craig Hibbert was Linwood’s only successful player
as it went down to a 208 defeat against Christchurch Football which grabbed easy victories in the bottom three places through John Oakley, Paul Monk, and David Welsh. There was quite a turnabout in the women’s section with the competition leader, Burnside 11, shaded by the previously bottom-placed Christchurch I. Burnside was without its star player, Jacqui James, but the home team was in turn minus its No. 1, Lorna Symes. Ayn Norton (at No. 3) played particularly well to
take Burnside's promising Julie Quinn in three games for her first division one win. Saskia O’Brien and Mary Hunt (Burnside) also had their first losses of the season.
Christchurch II was able to get within two points of Burnside II thanks to its 8-2 win over Ashburton with Philippa Idour winning 17 straight points against Czesia Bowan after trailing 1-4 in the third game. Both Sumner teams had convincing wins even though the top team's No. 1, Merle Holland, had a surprise 3-0 reversal at the hands off Lancaster Park’s Lee North. The other winning team, Burnside I, is likely to be without its captain, Lis Stringer, for the rest of the season. She ruptured her achilles tendon in the very first rally of the Temuka tournament at the week-end. Points:—
