Submissions on environment sought
PA Wellington The Environmental Council is calling for public submissions on the review of environmental policies in New Zealand by the Organisation for Economic and Cultural Development.
The review, released by the Minister for the Environment (Dr Shearer) on April 1, was commissioned by the Government last year after similar studies by the O.E.C.D. of environmental management in Sweden and Japan.
In the review the O.E.C.D. warned that the main energy and industrial projects planned for the 1980 s, together with planned expansion in forestry and agriculture, would put extra stress on New Zealand’s environment and raise difficult problems of resource man-
agement and pollution control.
Dr Shearer said that he was looking for a vigorous response from interested individuals and organisations to the council’s call for submissions.’
“The issues raised in the report are vital to the protection of the environment as we move towards the big energy, industrial, farm, and forestry developments of the 1980 s,” he said. “For this reason, we need to encourage the widest possible public debate on New Zealand’s environmental future.”
The published report, “Environmental Policies in New Zealand,” can be bought from Government bookshops.
Submissions will close on Friday, July 17, and should be addressed to the Secretary, Environmental Council, P.O. Box 10-382, Wellington.
