More police
PA Wellington More front-line and community police were needed immediately to deal with gangs, said the Labour Shadow Minister of Police (Mr M. A. Connelly) yesterday. Commenting on the Comber Committee on Gangs report released on Tuesday, Mr Connelly said that the police were se-. riously undermanned and working under extreme pressure.
Mr Connelly agreed with the report that a main cause of criminal activity, unemployment, had to be eliminated. He noted that there had been no reference to the effects of violence on television, “though it is common knowledge that television is a great conditioner of immature minds and that regular exposure to scenes depicting violence can cause people to act violently.”
