English netball tour

NZPA London The all-England netball team leaves London at the end of the week on its sixweek tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The 12-strong squad will have a month-long tour of New Zealand, where it will play three test matches. From New Zealand it will go to Australia to play several provincial games and three triangular test matches between Australia and New Zealand, which will also be touring Australia. This is the first British netball team tour of New Zealand since 1975. New Zealand, however, toured Britain in 1979, when it won all the test matches.

At present New Zealand, Australia and Trinidad are rated first in world ratings, while Britain trails behind in fourth place. “We aim to change that placing,” said Brian Warrell, a spokesman for the British Netball Association,, yesterday. “We see this tour of Australia and New Zealand as a forerunner to the world championships in 1983. “It is a fairly long tour and will be very useful experience for the team, especially the younger, players.” The team has two fairly young players, Sally Williams and Debbie Baird, whom Mr Warrell believes have been selected to some extent for their potential as much as their present ability.
