PA Wellington The next Labour government will restructure and improve the railway system as well as stabilise rail fares and charges, according to the Labour Shadow Minister of Railways (Mr Coleman). .. Rail'charges from short and long distance travel, and on freight, had all risen by more than 300 per cent since National had come to power in 1975. he said. Rail charges rose by 30 per cent on Monday. Mr Coleman said a Labour government would: — Present separate accounts for commercial and non-commercial services, such as social services and regional services; — Rigorously enforce the 150 km road-rail competition limits: - —. Strengthen and extend the Railways' capacity in freight forwarding; and, -- Ensure that interest rates were stabilised.
