Quality the keynote
Brother Industries, Ltd, have just celebrated a milestone — their ten millionth typewriter in 20 years. ’At present, the firm is manufacturing about 90.000 typewriters each month in Nagoya, Japan, with the emphasis on quality and precision.
There are 80 different keyboard arrangements in 22 languages on typewriters destined for more than 100 nations.-
Keeping up with the latest technology, Brother now produce an electronic typewriter with a delicate but durable “daisy wheel.'’ automatic paper feed and ultra-quiet operation. Made with surprisingly few parts, the new Brother is bound to last longer than ever, and the light touch control gives a feeling of “floating through copy." Change-overs are simplified by cassettes. The daisy wheel comes in a cassette which allows an easy, messfree change of typestyles. The ribbon cassettes are equally convenient and available for multi-strike film ribbon, correctable film or one time film ribbon. The one line memory of this Brother EM-1 allows for neat and rapid corrections. Just back-space to the error, press the correction key’ and type in the correct letter. The electronic relocator then
whisks you back to where you left off. By flicking the return selector to AUTO, the option is chosen for automatic line shift, which can result in a time, saving of up to a quarter by comparison with manual carriage return on conventional typewriters. The paper feed saves time, too. as the paper is automatically lined up to an exact position simply bv pressing the paper set'key. In addition. advance and retract keys move the paper in half line increments to permit
accurate typing of subscripts and superscripts. A further efficiency measure is the simultaneous underlining capability. Four motors purr inside the EM-1 but the quietness of its operation is remarkable. The sound shield over the carrier aperture muffles any typing noise that might disturb the office, and 30 seconds after you touch your last key keyboard power shuts off automatically. Even so, margin and tab stops are remembered for when you want to continue.
The widespread recognition of the quality of Brother products is not confined to typewriters. calculators, printers and the like: the firm also claims an enviable reputation as the maker of the machines that makes machines. These items made and used by Brother include tapping machines, rivetting machines, hydraulic autocycle lathes, milling machines, pressing machinesand ultrasonic washers. Quality products start with quality tools and quality has always been the over-riding consideration at Brother Industries, Ltd.
