‘Unenlightened cyclists’
Sir,—The hours of darkness increase the cyclist’s vulnerability considerably; yet many health-conscious penny-pinch-ing commuters ride not the crest of a wave, but a saddle of certain misfortune; for without some beacon to signal their presence, their lives are at great risk. While bicycle lighting systems have fallen a distant second to the technological advances now evident with many new lightweight models, that in no way justifies the many light-less cyclists pedalling our streets. The addition and subsequent maintenance of lighting is surely a small price to pay. The responsibility for education lies with all of us, for there is no one age group as the sole offender. If you’re a concerned cyclist or motorist, take the time to express that concern to those “still in the dark,” rather than being shocked and horrified by yet another road fatality that you may have been able to prevent.—Yours, etc.,' ■ ROBIN J. SMITH. May 11, 1981.
