Help for Chch author
Two. books by a Christchurch author, Barry Southam, have been awarded $5OO grants from the State Literary Fund. The grants were announced last week in Wellington .' by the Minister for the Arts (Mr Highet). They will go to the publishers of Mr Southam’s two books, Caveman Press, of Dunedin, to help with publication costs. “Getting grants like this often means the difference between getting your books published or not,” said Mr Southam yesterday. The grants were awarded to “Mixed Singles;” a book of short stories released two weeks ago, and to “The People Dance,” a book of poetry to be published in .October. The market for “literary” books was small in 'New Zealand, said Mr Southam, and grants assisting, publication were often necessary to get such books published.
Mr Southam was the only author to be awarded two grants to help with publication of his work. After returning from California last year’Mr Southern has worked full-time as- a freelance writer based In Christchurch.
