Search today for trampers
A search for a group of trampers overdue in the Arthur’s Pass area will start at dawn today.
The party of seven had been due to return on Sunday, the senior ranger at Arthur’s Pass, Mr J. Charles, sfcid yesterday. If the weather permitted, a Royal New Zealand Air Force Iroquois helicopter would join the search for the party. “We have had a few parties held up because of the weather,” said Mr Charles. “I think they are probably in one of the huts.”
There was a possibility that the party might be
running low on food, and this was the reason for the search.
The party left on Friday to walk up the Andrews Stream to the Poulter River, then on to a tributary of the Taramakau River.
Mr Charles did not hold any fear for the trampers’ safety last evening. If the helicopter cannot be used a party of 12 to 16 men will be organised. The party would take about a day to walk over ground which the helicopter could cover in about 25 minutes. Tramper injured, page 2
