Ridley has nasty fall

Special correspondent Invercargill

Neil Ridley, the Winton jockey, is progressing well in Dunedin Hosnital after a race fall at the Southland Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. Ridley was admitted to hospital bn Sunday with a broken jaw, a dislocated shoulder .arid extensive abrasions when his mount, Zing, fell at a' fence near the 1000 m in the Bluff Steeplechase on Saturday. Ridley’s foot was caught in the stirrup and he was dragged some 100 m before he became free.

' Ridley’s jaw was operated on two days ago. The surgeon who performed the operation said Ridley was fortunate in that the breaks were more horizontal than vertical and, as such, the jaw was able to be wired' without involving the teeth. Understandably, Ridley would be “pretty sore”, for a few days but should soon be able to eat properly. Possibly, he will be discharged from Dunedin Hospital by the week-end, even though he may have to spend a few more days in Kew Hospital, Invercargill, before being fully discharged.
