Shipping news Jetty should be ready for special vessels
Although no quarter-ramp vessels are expected at the Port of Lyttelton in the foreseeable future, the No. 7 jetty should be ready for them when they do arrive. As far as the wharf extension work is concerned. 78 per cent of the area of the extension has been completed with concrete decking totalling more than 223 sq m having been poured last month. Three concrete campshears have been poured, making the west side and the end facings of the jetty 56 per cent complete. Eight fender piles have been fitted to the east side.
Top decking infilling between rail tracks has been completed and construction residue removed. This enabled the west side of the jetty to be re-opened for berthage late last month and the berth was almost immediately occupied by the Freezer Prince which has been loading meat for Red Sea ports.
Also at No. 7 west, the 100-tonne mooring bollard concrete has been poured and back filling completed around the tie-back units.
Paving in the area is progressing with the whole of the area bounded by the Naval Point rail track to the north-west and the rail slabs to the east having been prepared to subgrade level and laying of the sub base is well advanced. The Sutton Quay redevelopment has seen the rail slabs for the No. 7 west No. 3 track and No. 7 east completed and fitted with rail holddown bolts and a 31m tall lighting mast has been erected.
