Holmdale faces major survey
The Holmdale, long-time carrier of food, sheep, dogs, houses, fencing, beer,' and a great variety of other commodities to and from .the Chatham Islands, is scheduled, to leave Lyttelton tonight for Nelson where she will be placed in the care of her owner’s (Union Steam Ship Company) engineering subsidiary, Anchor-Dorman, Ltd, for the most important survey of her life. The veteran "Chatham Islands Greyhound” will be undergoing her 20-year survey under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register of Shipping. Opinions amongst crew and officers, past and present, vary as to how much work she will need to have done on her and what the final cost will be. It is conceivable that, if the repairs needed to put her back in A-l condition cost too much, a replacement might be found for her. It is known that she will probably require extensive work done on her hull and decking although her engine is in top condition and should require little or no work. The Holmdale is expected to be out of action for more than a month. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (7.2 a.m.) 2500, Auckland (S.C.N.Z.).DEPARTURES Samoan Reefer (4.44 p.m.) 5915, Napier (Scales).
