New pollution graph

A new style of graph to illustrate daily air pollution levels in Christchurch during the winter appears for the first time on this page today. A new pollution index has been derived using techniques developed overseas. The advantage of the new graph is that it uses only one figure which is more easily interpreted than the three different figures used

on the graph which appeared in previous years. The pollution index is calculated from smoke and sulphur dioxide readings and is representative of the conditions which existed over the previous 24 hours. It has five sub-divisions: Good (0-50), Moderate (51-100), Heavy (101-199), Very Heavy (200-299), and Acute (300-500).
