Bobby Sands funeral
Sir,—Father Liam Mullen in his graveside sermon appealed for the people of Northern Ireland to follow Christ’s injunction and love one another. Before Vatican 11, Catholics showed a lamentable lack of consideration for other faiths, branding them as heretics or at best misguided fools. Catholics were forbidden to attend nonCatholic services such as weddings without special permission. Even Armistice Day services were prohibited. To the gain of churches such as Pentecostal, many Catholics have opted out of their own church in disgust. Granted the hate in Northern Ireland is not purely interdenominational but the clergy in the past have not preached love and toleration of other faiths. This unchristian attitude was worldwide. It will take many years of sincere love and hard work before the sins of the past can be forgiven and all Christians can say “brother in Christ I love you.”—Yours, etc., (Mr) YANN FLEMING, Amberley. May 9, 1981.
