Mr Leo Packer
The death occurred recently in Sydney of Mr Leo Packer, formerly music director for J. C. Williamson.
Theatregoers will ..remember the musical shows presented by the “Firm”, in the 1950 s and 19605, shows such as “The Merry Widow,” “Maid of the Mountains,” “Desert Song,” “Rose Marie,” and later, “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Oklahoma,” “Carousel,” and "Brigadoon.”
Mr Packer also trained the chorus and toured with‘the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, before turning to ballet, with the Borovansky Ballet. .
At the time of his death he was patron of the Christchurch Recorded Musical Society, a position he had held for the past 10 years.
An avid record collector, he regularly presented recorded concerts for tne society and in fact was due to come to New Zealand at the time of his death.
He came in touch with the society in the early 1950 s and brought the first long-playing records to Christchurch.
