Lincoln College wins students’ struggle

The rural students of Lincoln Colege met their town colleagues, University A, in the feature match at Lancaster Park on Saturday. It was the country team that won, thus keeping its unblemished record in the C.S.B. Cup senior rugby championship. Two weeks ago, University A looked unbeatable; its strong forwards and pacy backs complementing each' other splendidly in some excellent wins. But successive defeats by Christchurch and Lincoln College have meant it will be back to the drawing board for the coach, Mr Laurie O’Reilly,, and his men. To add to a sad story for Mr O’Reilly on Saturday, he had to pay to enter the ground. There was not enough passes for his squad of players and he met the

In spite of the defeats, University A has not fallen from the reckoning. It has the ability to bounce back. Lincoln College scored the only try of the match against University, Steve Walker taking an in-pass from Lance Rickard after a scrum in front of the University posts and that was the difference between the two teams at the end. Mark Liddicoat kicked three penalty goals for University to advance his total this season to 61 and John Holmes also kicked three penalty goals, although he missed five other attempts, including two from in front. The Cellar Ghost “player of the day” award was won by College’s youthful halfback, Bruce Deans. The corresponding award at Rugby Park went to the New Brighton first five-eighths, Wayne • Burleigh, even though his '

team was on the losing ent against Christchurch. Burleigh’s astute line-kick ing, sound positional pla; and consistent cover defenci contributed much to Nev Brighton holding a 12-10 leat with -only seven minutes re maining. However, Christ church came back spectacu larly, scoring two uncon verted tries and a penaltj goal in the dying stages. Four penalty goals by the New Brighton full-back Dave Bowick, gave him his half century of points. His tally stands at 56. Apart from Lincoln College, Marist remains the only other unbeaten team. It started badly against Suburbs, but hit its stride in the second half and finished a clearcut winner.

High School Old Boys kept with the leaders, but were not convincing against University B, and Belfast, with its All Black first fiveeighths, Wayne Smith, again displaying his class, swamped Hornby. Linwood won more easily than the final score showed against Sydenham, while Shirley, after having much the better of the first half, had to be ' content with a draw against Merivale-Papa-nui. The match between the two teams previously without a point, Albion and Burnside, was one sided. Albion scored six tries against a team which tackled ineptly and Burnside is now a lonely last on the ladder.
