Patient care

Sir, — Apparently the North Canterbury Hospital Board feels that patient overcrowding is the cause of “pressure” on nurses (“The Press,” May 7). Certainly this is correct, and it would be difficult to staff hospitals adequately at “peak” , periods. This could be relieved , by a “nurse bank” of on-call ( staff who could be contacted | when necessary. However we ( need to treat the cause of < hospital admissions more effec- f tively — i.e. preventative , medicine. Many admissions are 5 related to high blood pressure, j alcoholism and other stress- s related diseases. Surely we < need to look towards health ' education in the community to , combat preventable diseases. ; — Yours, etc., < LESLEY LEARMONTH. 1 May 7, 1981. ,
