Pro-tour march for Chch
A march in Support of the proposed Springbok tour will be held in Christchurch on June 5 by the Society for the Protection of Individual Rights. The secretary of the society, Mrs E. J. Sutherland, said that the Friday evening march would begin from Latimer Square and Cranmer Square simultaneously. A wreath would be laid at the War Memorial in the Square in memory of people who had died in wars fighting for freedom. She would not like to predict how many people would turn out in support of the tour but the pro-tour
march in Timaru on Friday was an indication of support the society hoped to get in Christchurch. The society believed that the basic question of the tour issue was the right of individual people to freedom of association, freedom of choice, and freedom from fear. In Auckland, about 1200 people marched along Queen Street on Saturday in support of the tour. Most of'them? wore green badges with the slogan “Support the tour” on them. They caried placards with slogans on them such as, “It’s more than a rugby tour. It’s
our freedom of choice.” “In memory of our footballers who gave their lives for freedom,” and “Why pick on New Zealand only.”
