‘Maverick’ M.P. given post

PA Wellington ' The maverick Labour member of Parliament for Manurewa (Mr R. O. Douglas) has decided to accept a position in the Labour Shadow Cabinet. He told reporters yesterday that the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Rowling) had asked him if he would be interested in joining in the group as Labour’s Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry and “After giving it some thought I said yes.” Mr Douglas, a former Minister of Broadcasting, had split with the party on economic policy last year. He said that the new appointment gave him a public role where as before he had

been working in the background on Labour policy; Mr Douglas described himself as one of two or three logical successors to the position formerly held by the member for Palmerston North, Mr J. A. Walding, who will retire at the end of the year. He said a large body of the Labour caucus supported his appointment. “One of the reasons I am anxious to move back into the Shadow Cabinet is the realism that I have seen come through in Labour policy ... the recently announced Labour agriculture policy is one with which I thoroughly agree,” Mr Douglas said.
