Big drug raid nets 51

PA ' Wellington Several drug networks were smashed yesterday in the biggest narcotics raid in the Wellington area for many years, said Detective Inspector Brian Hartly. Months of police planning paid off when 51 people were arrested in the Wellington and Manawatu districts. Mr Hartly, the officer in charge of the raid, said that

the police were “elated but tired” after a simultaneous swoop on 40 houses at 6 a.m. More than 12 hours later they were still interviewing and processing those arrested. The raid employed 225 policemen and women from Upper Hutt', Lower Hutt, Porirua, Wellington, Levin, and Palmerston North. The 51 people arrested will

be charged with dealing offences, involving mainly heroin and LSD, when they appear in Court today. “This has made a significant inroad into the Wellington drug scene,” Mr Hartly said; In two similar raids earlier this year the police netted about 50 people in the Hutt Valley and Nelson areas.
