Fiat in trouble
NZPA Turin i I Fiat SPA, Italy’s largest carmaker has announced ; that it will lay off 68,000 i .production workers for two weeks in the next two i months because of rising ; stocks of unsold cars. The lay-offs affect about 75 per cent of the private company's blue-collar ' workers.’ The idled workers will join 23.000 employees who have been laid off since I last autumn (northern) under a compromise agreement
reached with unions to avoid lots of firings. The new lay-offs will last an average five working days in June and five in July. Fiat has also proposed the unions that an extra week be added to the four-week summer vacation beginning in August. In recent months, the company has been hit by a downturn in domestic demand. Unsold automobiles are at present "well over the 80,000 units estimated at the beginning of this year.’’ according to a company source.
